Description :

Hilo Coast United Church of Christ, originally known as Honomu Christian Church, has been a part of the Honomu community since 1894, when Missionary Shiro Sokabe arrived from Japan to offer spiritual direction to Japanese plantation workers on Hawaii island. Seeing the great human need, Rev. Sokabe established an orphanage and school, providing meals, housing and guidance to all who came seeking help. The ministry first developed by rev. Sokabe now serves many diverse ethnic groups who work together to reveal God’s light and hope. Some of our current activities include:

  • Hawaii Harvest, a monthly event where we pick and glean excess fruit and vegetables to donate fresh produce for Hilo’s Food Pantry
  • omen’s Fellowship Rummage Sales twice yearly where we offer gently used goods for a quarter per piece
  • Got Shoes Go To School shoe vouchers for local elementary students without decent footwear
  • Sokabe Mission Fellowship every five years or so sponsors group mission study trips to Japan
  • AA hosts an open meeting every Monday evening
  • Hawaii Island Adult Care offers programs each Wednesday and Friday in our Fellowship Hall

Hours of operation:
We meet on Sunday mornings at 10 am for worship in our chapel. Following worship, we meet for refreshments and casual conversation in our Fellowship Hall
